Amazon's $85-off RX 9070 XT deal isn't the actual deal this week. here's the one that was

PC Guide is calling a $715 ASUS Prime RX 9070 XT "a handy find for 4K gaming" this week, discounted from an $800 list price. Before you click buy: AMD's actual reference MSRP for the RX 9070 XT is $599, and at least three other 16GB listings were cheaper than $715 the same week. The $85-off headline is accurate. Whether it's the best price actually available right now is a different question, and it isn't.

The math the headline skips

To be fair to PC Guide, they're comparing $715 against this specific card's own $800 list price, and that's a legitimate number — the ASUS Prime is a factory-overclocked, premium-cooled edition, not the bare reference design AMD originally priced at $599. A premium card carrying a premium MSRP is normal. What that comparison doesn't tell you is whether $715 is a good day to buy an RX 9070 XT, full stop, against every other 16GB card sitting on a shelf that same week.

What else was on the shelf the same week

A Gigabyte RX 9070 XT Gaming OC, same 16GB tier, was listed at $549.99 at Walmart. An XFX Swift RX 9070 XT was $669.99 on Amazon, 9% off its own list price. A PowerColor Reaper undercut $715 too, at $689.99. None of those are the exact card in the headline, but they're the same GPU with the same 16GB frame buffer, and every one of them cost less.

The actually-free alternative

Nvidia is running its own giveaway in parallel: a full RTX 5080 Founders Edition, custom-wrapped for a Control Resonant tie-in, given away to whoever comments "#RTXPowersPlay" on Nvidia's official post and watches the associated livestream — winners have two days to respond before Nvidia moves to the next name. It's a lottery, not a purchase plan, and the odds aren't published. But it costs nothing to enter, which is more than you can say for anything discounted 11% off an inflated anchor. Both of these are landing the same week Chinese distributor prices on RTX 50-series cards jumped as much as 59% — the broader memory market is trending toward higher prices, which makes checking real price history more important right now, not less.
