Is the RTX 5080 worth it in 2026? Buy now or wait

Our story about an RTX 5080 costing more than an RTX 5090 did at launch is still the one people find when they search this card's price, and the question behind it hasn't changed: should I buy one now, or wait? I've pulled today's real prices, who's actually selling, the price record since June and Nvidia's own spec sheets. I'm not going to quote frame rates. The decision here is about money, and the performance comparisons are linked below.

What an RTX 5080 costs today (25 September 2026)

Nvidia's own marketplace wasn't listing a Founders Edition 5080 when I checked, only partner cards bundled with a game, from $1,699.99 to $2,099.99, all marked out of stock. So the realistic price is the $1,640–$1,680 band on Amazon, and $1,679.99 if you want it sold by Amazon itself.

The price record

• 31 July: Best Buy listed the ASUS ROG Astral RTX 5080 at $2,099.99, up from its $1,499.99 launch price, after Nvidia's third price increase of 2026 (our report, via Tom's Hardware).
• June to August: Newegg's median RTX 5080 price rose only about 3%, per Club386's tracking, while cheaper cards jumped 27–39% (our report).
• 6–9 August: Nvidia sold Founders Editions at the $999 MSRP, but only in person at QuakeCon (same report).
• 23 August: a PNY RTX 5080 was listed at $1,249 in a Walmart store and over $1,500 at the big retailers. A $702.56 clearance find went viral, but it was a one-store fluke (our explainer).
• Last 30 days: the videocardprices.com tracker shows the price unchanged, currently $1,599.99 for a ZOTAC card at Amazon.

The pattern matters more than any single number. The 5080 went up less than the rest of the lineup over the summer, and it's been flat for a month. That's not a card that's about to crash in price. It's a card sitting at a plateau set by the memory shortage.

RTX 5080 vs RTX 5070 Ti: what the extra money buys

From Nvidia's RTX 5080 and RTX 5070 Ti pages: the 5080 has 20% more CUDA cores and a higher boost clock, with the same 16GB of GDDR7 on the same 256-bit bus. At launch you paid 33% more for that: $999 vs $749, per Nvidia's CES 2025 announcement. Today, at Amazon.com prices, you pay 42% more, $500 on top. The gap got wider in dollars and in ratio. Should you wait for an RTX 5080 Super?

I wouldn't. The card people were waiting for, a 24GB 5080 Super, was reportedly built and then cancelled over memory costs, according to leaked roadmaps and multiple reports. Nvidia hasn't announced a replacement. Waiting for a product that's been shelved, while prices sit flat, is waiting for nothing in particular.

My buy lines

• You'll use every bit of speed, and it's ≤ ~$1,570: buy the 5080. At that price you're paying the same premium over a 5070 Ti that Nvidia set at launch.
• It's above ~$1,570, as it is today: buy the 5070 Ti. Same 16GB, same bus, $500 less. That's the money for a better monitor or more storage.
