Should you run local AI on Windows or Linux?

So which should you use?

My honest guidance. If you have an NVIDIA GPU and want the least hassle — which describes most people — use Windows. Ollama and LM Studio are excellent on Windows, and you'll spend your time using AI instead of configuring an OS. If you're an AMD GPU owner, seriously consider Linux, because ROCm support is more mature there and you'll hit fewer compatibility walls — this is the single biggest reason to choose Linux. If you're a developer or power user who wants maximum performance, the newest tools, or a headless server, Linux (or WSL2 on your Windows machine) is worth it. And if you're on a Mac, that's a different path entirely with its own strengths. The reassuring truth: whichever you pick, the core local-AI experience — Ollama, the popular models, the tools — works on all of them. Don't let OS choice paralyze you; your GPU and VRAM matter far more to what you can actually run.
