ONTOS, Fable, Lords of the Fallen 2 — all pushed into 2027 within weeks of each other. studios cite polish, but the calendar tells a simpler story: nobody wants to launch near November 19.
Frictional Games — the studio behind SOMA and Amnesia — pushed its next game ONTOS from 2026 into 2027 on July 2, calling it their 'most ambitious game to date.' On its own, an ambitious indie horror game needing more time is unremarkable. But ONTOS is one tile in a line of dominoes: Fable moved to February 2027. Lords of the Fallen 2 slid to Q1 2027. Outward 2's early access was pulled days before its July 7 date. Each studio gives its own reason. The calendar suggests a shared one.

Why one game can clear a calendar
Grand Theft Auto VI isn't a normal release. Take-Two is guiding to something like $8 billion in net bookings around it. When a game that size lands, it doesn't just take sales — it takes attention, streamer hours, review coverage and player time, for weeks on either side. For a mid-size studio, launching into that window means being invisible during the only stretch that matters for a game's commercial life. Moving to 2027 costs money in extended development; launching next to GTA 6 can cost the entire game.
The honest caveat
It's worth being careful here: no studio has said 'we moved because of GTA 6.' The stated reasons are real ones — polish, scope, feedback. Games genuinely do slip. And GTA 6 has itself been delayed twice, from fall 2025 to May 2026 to November 2026, so the runway everyone is clearing has moved before. What we can say factually is that an unusual cluster of 2026 titles moved into 2027 within a short window, and that the biggest release in the industry's history sits in the middle of the vacated period. Draw the line yourself.
For players, the practical effect is a thinner late 2026 and a crowded early 2027. If you were looking forward to a specific game this autumn, check the date again — there's a good chance it moved while you weren't looking.
