Kingdom Hearts spent a decade as blurry cloud streams on Switch. that's finally over

If you played Kingdom Hearts on the original Switch, you played it as a cloud stream — a compressed video feed piped from a server, complete with input lag and a hard dependency on your internet holding up. It was, charitably, a compromise. Square Enix confirmed at the June 9 Nintendo Direct that this era is over: Kingdom Hearts IV is coming to Switch 2 at launch running natively, and the Kingdom Hearts Collection covering I through III arrives natively on October 8, 2026.

Why 'native' is the whole story here

Cloud versions on the original Switch weren't a stylistic choice — they were an admission the hardware couldn't run the games. So Kingdom Hearts IV shipping natively on Switch 2, day one, alongside PS5, Xbox Series and PC, is a real technical statement about how far Nintendo's hardware jumped. It's arguably a better indicator of Switch 2's third-party viability than any benchmark: publishers who previously wrote Nintendo off as a streaming-only target are now building native versions into day-one plans.

What's in the collection

The October 8 collection bundles HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX, 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, and Kingdom Hearts III plus its Re Mind expansion — effectively the mainline saga to date. That means the full series will be properly playable on Nintendo hardware for the first time, which matters for a franchise whose plot famously requires having played roughly everything to follow. Newcomers planning to jump in at IV finally have a coherent way to catch up on the same console.

No release date for Kingdom Hearts IV itself yet. The series' 25th anniversary falls in March 2027, which is the window most people are circling, though Square Enix hasn't committed to it. For now the concrete date is October 8 — and for Switch owners who've spent a decade watching this series through a compressed video stream, that's the one that counts.
