How to get your pages cited by AI assistants: what Microsoft and Google actually say

There's no secret file or special markup. Microsoft and Google both say the same few things, and our own data showed which pages AI assistants picked. The checklist for a business site, with the myths, like llms.txt, sorted out.

To get cited by AI assistants, a page needs to be readable by their crawlers, findable in search, and built so one clear answer can be lifted out of it. That's the whole of what Microsoft and Google publish on the subject. Google says there are "no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode", and that it ignores llms.txt files. Microsoft's guidance comes down to direct questions with clear answers, lists and tables, and nothing important hidden in tabs. Here's the checklist for a business site, in the companies' own words, plus what our own citation data showed. Checked 31 October 2026.

1. Make sure the AI crawlers can read your site

An assistant can't cite a page it can't read. OpenAI's crawler documentation says "OAI-SearchBot is used to surface websites in search results in ChatGPT's search features", and that "Sites that are opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers."

Open yoursite.com/robots.txt and check that OAI-SearchBot, Bingbot (which feeds Copilot) and Googlebot aren't blocked. Some hosting firewalls and security plugins block unfamiliar bots by default, so check those settings too.

2. Be indexed by Google and Bing first

AI answers are built on search indexes. Google's page on AI features says a page "must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet". Microsoft's guidance says "Crawlability, metadata, internal linking, and backlinks remain essential for ensuring your content is discoverable."

So the basics still decide it: the page is in Google's and Bing's index, it isn't set to noindex, and other pages link to it.

3. Answer the question at the top

Microsoft's guide puts it plainly: "Direct questions with clear answers mirror the way people search." Its advice is to make answers "snippable", using "concise, self-contained phrasing in lists, Q&As, and tables".

For a business page, that means the first paragraph answers the question your customer typed, in one or two sentences, before any background. "Do you deliver to Austin? Yes, in two working days, free over $50" beats three paragraphs about your company story.

Our own data matched this. Of the 710 pages Copilot cited on our site in three months, the most cited were how-to guides and pages that answer one question directly. A single page also kept being cited for every wording of its question: "how to boost fps", "how to get better fps" and "how to increase my fps" all pointed to the same guide.

4. Structure it so a line can be lifted out

  • Clear headings. Microsoft: "Structure your content: Use schema, clear headings, and modular layouts." Bing's AI Performance announcement adds that "Clear headings, tables, and FAQ sections help surface key information".
  • Tables for comparisons and prices. A plan table is easier to quote correctly than a paragraph.
  • FAQs with the real questions. Use the exact questions customers ask you by email or on the phone.
  • Nothing important hidden. Microsoft warns: "AI systems may not render hidden content, so key details can be skipped." Don't put your prices or policies only inside tabs, accordions or images. Its guide also advises keeping core information out of PDFs and in normal page text.

5. Keep the facts current

Bing's AI Performance announcement recommends keeping content up to date and supporting claims with evidence. An assistant that quotes last year's price is worse than one that doesn't mention you. When your prices, hours or policies change, update the page the same day, and keep one page as the clear source for each fact.

What you can skip

  • llms.txt. Google's AI optimization guide says creating these files "will neither harm nor help your site's visibility or rankings in Google Search, as Google Search ignores them."
  • Special AI markup. Google: "You don't need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup to appear in these features. There's also no special schema.org structured data that you need to add."
  • Chopping pages into tiny pieces. Google's guide says "There's no requirement to break your content into tiny pieces for AI to better understand it."
  • Mass-producing pages to cover every question. That's what Google's spam policy calls scaled content abuse. Read what Google says about AI-written content before you automate.

How to know it's working

Use the free checks in how to see if ChatGPT and Copilot mention your business: Bing's AI Performance report for Copilot citations, Search Console's generative AI report for Google, Google Analytics for visits, and the assistants themselves. Expect citations long before visits. Our site had 104,800 Copilot citations in three months and 3 visits from copilot.com in October, while ChatGPT sent 135. The full numbers are here.

Our recommendation

Start with the five steps above. They cost nothing and they're what both Microsoft and Google ask for. When you want to see the effect without checking by hand, an AI-visibility tracker checks your customers' questions daily. For a small business, SE Ranking Core is our first pick: it includes tracking for 25 prompts a day across 5 AI engines, plus rank tracking and a site audit to fix the indexing basics in step 2, and its 14-day trial doesn't ask for a card. Checked on SE Ranking's site on 31 October 2026.

Common questions

How do I get my website cited by ChatGPT?
Allow OAI-SearchBot in your robots.txt (OpenAI says opted-out sites won't be shown in ChatGPT search answers), make sure your pages are indexed by search engines, and answer your customers' questions directly near the top of the page.
Do I need llms.txt for AI search?
Not for Google. Google's AI optimization guide says llms.txt files will neither harm nor help visibility in Google Search, because Google Search ignores them.
Is there special schema for AI Overviews?
No. Google says there's no special schema.org structured data you need to add, and no additional requirements beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet.
What kind of content do AI assistants cite?
Microsoft recommends direct questions with clear answers and snippable lists, Q&As and tables. In our own data, how-to guides and pages answering one question in the first paragraph were cited most.
How long does it take to get cited?
Neither Microsoft nor Google publishes a timeline. A page has to be crawled and indexed first, so keep your sitemap current and link new pages from pages that are already indexed.
