Garmin Forerunner 970 vs WHOOP 5.0: GPS watch or screenless recovery band?
For athletes deciding between a GPS training watch and a screen-free recovery tracker. The deciding difference is a screen and GPS on one side, a yearly membership on the other.
The short answer
Most people who run, ride or race should get the Garmin Forerunner 970, because it has a screen, multi-band GPS and maps, and no membership is required. Get WHOOP 5.0 if you mainly want sleep, strain and recovery coaching from a band with no screen that you never take off, and you are fine paying a yearly membership.

Questions people ask before buying
- Does WHOOP 5.0 have a screen?
- No. WHOOP 5.0 is a screenless band, so you see your sleep, strain and recovery data in the WHOOP app on your phone.
- Can WHOOP replace a running watch?
- Not fully. WHOOP has no GPS of its own, so pace and distance come from Strava activities synced into WHOOP. If you want live pace and maps on your wrist, a watch like the Forerunner 970 does that.
- Do I have to pay a membership for WHOOP?
- Yes. WHOOP sells three yearly plans (One, Peak and Life) with the device included. The Forerunner 970 needs no plan; Garmin Connect+ is optional.
- Can I swim with WHOOP 5.0 or the Forerunner 970?
- Yes. Garmin rates the Forerunner 970 at 5 ATM. WHOOP staff say WHOOP 5.0 is IP68 for up to 10 meters for 2 hours, but it is not made for diving or scuba.
- Does it make sense to wear both?
- Some athletes do, using the watch for GPS workouts and WHOOP for 24/7 recovery. That means paying the WHOOP membership on top of owning the watch.
