Etsy just banned AI patterns. Here's what crochet and knitting sellers have to change

Since 22 October, Etsy says the instructions in a crochet, knitting, sewing, quilting or embroidery pattern must be your own work, and every pattern listing needs a real photo of something made from it. What changed, what Etsy actually wrote, and a checklist for your shop.

If you sell crochet, knitting, sewing, quilting or cross-stitch patterns, this update gives you two jobs: the pattern has to be yours, and the listing has to show a real piece made from it. Our general page, did Etsy ban AI?, has the rules for every shop. This one is only about patterns.

What exactly did Etsy ban?

The Handbook post says that if you sell functional guides, "the information buyers rely on to create or use your item must be your own work, not generated by AI." Then it says it plainly: "AI-generated functional guides are no longer allowed on Etsy."

Etsy's page on AI creations defines the category, and the first example on its list is "craft patterns, such as knitting, crochet, sewing, embroidery, quilting, or beading patterns". Cross-stitch isn't named on its own, but a cross-stitch chart is a pattern that tells the buyer how to make a specific result, so treat it the same way.

Etsy also explains why. AI-generated instructions "may be more likely to contain errors or lead to poor results, and buyers often won't discover the problem until they've already spent time and materials following them."

Note: Etsy's "Pattern Policy" page covers Pattern by Etsy, its website builder, not craft patterns.

What passes and what doesn't

A pattern listing under the 22 October 2026 rules

The written pattern

Won't pass now
Instructions generated by AI
What Etsy wants
Instructions that are your own work

The finished-piece photo

Won't pass now
Only mockups or renders of the result
What Etsy wants
At least one real, unedited photo of something made from your pattern

AI images of the result

Won't pass now
AI images as the only picture of the finished result
What Etsy wants
AI images alongside the real photo, matching the real piece

Your other photos

Won't pass now
Edits that change colour, texture or hide flaws
What Etsy wants
Edits to light, colour balance, crop or background, piece unchanged

The listing itself

Won't pass now
Bot-generated listings with no human involvement
What Etsy wants
Listings you create and check yourself

The photo rule is spelled out in the Listing Image Requirements policy. Under "Photos of finished results" it says that if you sell craft patterns, you must "include at least one real, unedited photo of something made using your product", and it gives the example of "a completed crochet project made from your pattern." The next line closes the mockup route: "AI-generated images cannot be the only images used to show the finished result."

Does your pattern listing pass?

Check one pattern listing in four questions
  1. Did you write the instructions yourself?

If AI generated them, Etsy no longer allows the listing

  2. Is there a real photo of a piece made from it?

Unedited, a real finished project, not a render or mockup

  3. Do your AI images match that piece?

Same colours, stitch texture, shape and size as the real one

  4. Then the listing meets the new rules

Extra AI scenes are fine alongside the real photo

From Etsy's Seller Handbook (22 Oct 2026) and Listing Image Requirements policy, read 27 Oct 2026.

What happens if a listing doesn't pass?

If a buyer opens a case because what they got is "materially different" from your listing, Etsy says "you may be responsible for refunding the buyer." The policy adds that Etsy may remove misleading listings, and repeated violations can go "up to and including shop removal."

Etsy says it will flag AI-generated images in the listing form with tips, and removed listings can be appealed through the Policy violations page in Shop Manager. Buyers get a new "misleading AI imagery" report reason, which Etsy says "won't result in immediate enforcement action" at first. Etsy doesn't say how it will check whether instructions were written by AI, and we won't guess.

Fix your pattern listings this week

If AI generated the instructions, Etsy no longer allows that listing. Rewrite and test it yourself, or take it down.

Make the project from your own pattern and add one unedited photo of it on a real background.

Etsy recommends making the first photo the most realistic picture of what the buyer gets.

Colour, yarn texture, stitch detail, shape, size. Delete any image the real piece doesn't match.

Etsy says existing listings that don't meet the requirements need updating.

Where AI still fits in a pattern shop

AI can still help with photos. It just can't replace the real piece. Outside the one required unedited photo, Etsy says you can still use editing tools, "including AI, to adjust lighting or color, crop or resize images, or change backgrounds", as long as the piece doesn't look different. So make the piece, photograph it, then build extra scenes from that photo, and check every scene against the real piece. AI is good at changing yarn colours and adding stitches that aren't there.

Selling planners, printables or wall art instead? Different rules apply; see how people sell AI digital products on Etsy.

Quick answers for pattern sellers

Can I still sell crochet and knitting patterns on Etsy?
Yes. Etsy now requires the instructions to be your own work, not generated by AI, and the listing must show a real result made from the pattern.
Can I use an AI mockup of the finished project?
Only alongside a real one. Etsy's policy says to include at least one real, unedited photo of something made using your pattern, and AI-generated images cannot be the only images showing the finished result.
Does the ban cover cross-stitch, sewing and quilting patterns?
Etsy names knitting, crochet, sewing, embroidery, quilting and beading patterns. Cross-stitch charts aren't named separately, but they are instructions for a specific result, so treat them the same way.
Do I need to change pattern listings I made before 22 October?
Yes. Etsy says listings that don't meet the new Listing Image Requirements need to be updated.
What if Etsy removes one of my pattern listings?
Etsy says you can appeal through the Policy violations page in Shop Manager, the same way as for other policy violations.
