Did Etsy ban AI? No. Here's what the 22 October rule actually changed

Etsy didn't ban AI photos. It now wants one unedited photo of the real item on most listings, bans AI-written patterns, recipes and instructions, and removes bot-made listings. One table, one checklist, Etsy's own words.

AI edits to light, colour, crop or background on your extra photos
Not allowed
Edits that hide flaws or make the item look different

The required photo

Allowed
One unedited photo of the actual item on a real background
Not allowed
A main set with no real photo at all

Patterns, recipes, instructions

Allowed
Guides you wrote, shown with a real result made from them
Not allowed
AI-generated functional guides, or an AI-simulated result

AI art

Allowed
AI art where you play a clear creative role and disclose it
Not allowed
Calling AI work handmade or entirely your own

Listings

Allowed
Listings you create, AI-assisted or not
Not allowed
Bot-generated listings with no human involvement

The rule people missed in the viral posts: Etsy says "outside of your required unedited photo, you can still use photo-editing tools, including AI, to adjust lighting or color, crop or resize images, or change backgrounds." The line is accuracy, not AI.

Which rule applies to your shop?

Find your rule in four questions
  1. Do you sell patterns, recipes or instructions?

The guide must be your own work, plus a photo of a real result

  2. Print-on-demand, digital, custom or made-to-order?

Different photo requirements apply; check Etsy's policy for your item type

  3. A physical item you make or stock?

Add one unedited photo of the real item on a real background

  4. Then use AI for the rest

Lifestyle scenes, backgrounds, light; never change the item

From Etsy's Seller Handbook post of 22 October 2026. Exceptions are in Etsy's Listing Image Requirements policy.

Why "accurate" is the whole game

We tested this before the rule landed. One flash-lit phone photo of a plain, uncuffed beanie went into two AI image models. The first model made five beautiful shots, and every one added a fold-over cuff the real hat doesn't have. Under Etsy's new rule, those five photos are the problem: the hat a buyer receives would be "materially different" from the listing, and Etsy says "you may be responsible for refunding the buyer."

  • The original phone photo: a plain dark beanie with no cuff on a wooden table, lit by camera flash
The unedited photo. This is the one Etsy now requires.
  • AI white-background shot of the same plain uncuffed beanie with a thin rolled hem
AI, accurate. Same shape, no cuff. Allowed.
  • AI flat lay of a dark beanie with a fold-over cuff the real hat does not have
AI, wrong. It added a cuff. Under the new rule, a refund risk.

The fix that worked for us: tell the model what the product is not ("no cuff, no fold"), then check every output against the real item. Full test, costs and prompts: one phone photo, 12 AI product shots.

What should you fix in your listings this week?

Unedited, the actual item, a real background. Etsy suggests making your first photo the clearest, most realistic one.

Shape, colour, size, texture, details like cuffs, clasps and stitching.

Etsy recommends saying when listing images were edited with AI.

Your own instructions only, plus a photo of something actually made from them.

Etsy says listings that don't meet the new requirements need updating.

What is Etsy doing to enforce it?

Etsy lists four changes. When you upload images it will flag AI-generated ones and give tips, "and over time" check existing images too. It is building detection to remove listings that use AI "to create fraudulent inventory", with appeals through the Policy violations page in Shop Manager. Buyers get a new "misleading AI imagery" reason on the report button, which Etsy says "won't result in immediate enforcement action" at first. And "in the coming months" it plans more labels telling buyers when AI was used.

Selling crochet, knitting or sewing patterns? What the pattern rule means listing by listing: Etsy just banned AI patterns.

Print-on-demand, digital, custom or made-to-order? Etsy gives those item types their own photo rules: the POD and digital photo rules.

Quick answers

Did Etsy ban AI-generated images?
No. Etsy requires one unedited photo of the actual item on most listings and says every photo must accurately show what the buyer receives. Your other photos can still be edited with AI.
Can I still sell AI art on Etsy?
Yes, when you play a clear creative role and disclose that it was made with AI. You can't present AI work as handmade or entirely your own creation.
Are AI-generated patterns banned on Etsy?
Yes. AI-generated functional guides, such as patterns, recipes and instructions, are no longer allowed, and those listings must show a real result made from the instructions.
Does the unedited photo rule apply to print-on-demand and digital items?
Etsy says different requirements apply to print-on-demand, digital, customized and made-to-order items. Check its Listing Image Requirements policy for your item type.
Do I have to change my old listings?
Yes. Etsy says listings that don't meet the new Listing Image Requirements need to be updated.
What happens if my AI photos don't match the item?
If a buyer opens a case because the item is materially different from the listing, Etsy says you may be responsible for refunding the buyer.
