What did the ROG Astral RTX 5080 OC cost at launch?

The ROG Astral RTX 5080 OC launched at $1,499.99. ASUS published its US launch pricing for its RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 cards on 30 January 2025, and TweakTown printed the full list that day. ASUS's own product page shows no price, so that launch list is the record.

The same list puts the rest of the ASUS range in context. It shows how far above NVIDIA's $999 starting price the premium partner cards sat from day one.

Why is the RTX 5080 more expensive than the RTX 5090's launch price?

Partner cards are priced by board makers and retailers, not by NVIDIA's list. NVIDIA still shows $999 for the RTX 5080. The gap opened at the store. The most likely driver is memory: every RTX 50 card carries GDDR7, and 2026 has been a year of memory shortages driven by AI datacenter demand.

We can point to one primary source on that point. In February 2026, NVIDIA raised the DGX Spark from $3,999 to $4,699 and said on its developer forum that the change was "due to memory supply constraints". That is a different product. It still shows NVIDIA itself naming memory as the cost that moved. Our memory-shortage explainer follows the same pressure across RAM, SSDs and consoles.

Should you buy an RTX 5080 at these prices?

Only if you need it now and can't use something else. A regular RTX 5080 at $1,799.99 is still the same chip and memory as the Astral. If your current card works, waiting costs nothing. If you run local AI, VRAM matters more than the badge. Our RTX 5070 Ti vs RTX 5080 for local AI comparison shows both cards top out at 16GB.

Compare against today's street price, not MSRP. NVIDIA's $999 has not matched a shelf price in months.

Buy the cheapest RTX 5080 that fits your case. Premium coolers add hundreds for the same GPU and 16GB.

Check the price history before trusting a markdown. A discount off an inflated price is not a deal.

If you only need the card for a few heavy jobs, renting can beat buying. Our [cloud GPU price tracker](/cloud-gpu) listed an RTX 5080 from $0.24 an hour on 4 October 2026.

Verdict

Buy now or wait?

Skip the Astral at $2,099.99. If you need an RTX 5080 this month, buy the cheapest in-stock card from a major retailer, and check real price history before trusting a discount. If you need more than 16GB, look at the RTX 5090 for local AI instead.

Best for: Anyone pricing an RTX 5080 or a premium partner card this autumn.
