There's a cheaper way to use Higgsfield (no subscription)

If you only make a few videos a month, a $59 plan you don't use up is the expensive way in. The Higgsfield API bills per clip from a small prepaid balance, has the top video models, and a coding agent like Codex or Claude Code can drive it for you. Here's the setup, the prices and who should skip it.

Why a plan feels expensive if you don't make much

A Higgsfield plan is a monthly bundle of credits. On 28 October 2026, Starter was $19 a month for 270 credits, but its card lists "Access to Seedance 2.0 Fast & 2.0 Mini" and "Access to selected models only". For the newest video models you're looking at Plus: $59 a month (or $47 a month billed annually) for 1,200 credits.

That's a good deal if you spend the credits. It's a bad one if you make six clips in a busy week and nothing for the rest of the month, because the plan costs the same either way.

The Higgsfield API works the other way round. Higgsfield's own FAQ: "Higgsfield API uses pay-per-generation pricing with no subscriptions or seat fees." You top up a balance, and each generation takes its price from it.

Plan or API: what's actually different

What you pay

Plan (Starter, Plus, Ultra)
A fixed monthly price
Higgsfield API
Only what you generate

How it's counted

Plan (Starter, Plus, Ultra)
Credits that reset every month
Higgsfield API
US dollars per second of video or per image

Top video models

Plan (Starter, Plus, Ultra)
Plus and up for the newest ones
Higgsfield API
Every model in the catalog, from the first dollar

Unused money

Plan (Starter, Plus, Ultra)
Monthly credits reset
Higgsfield API
Balance lasts a year from when you add it

Failed generations

Plan (Starter, Plus, Ultra)
Depends on the tool
Higgsfield API
"Not charged", per the API docs

Where you use it

Plan (Starter, Plus, Ultra)
higgsfield.ai, the app, MCP in Claude or ChatGPT
Higgsfield API
Your own code or an AI coding agent

Free extras

Plan (Starter, Plus, Ultra)
Unlimited windows and free gens on some models
Higgsfield API
None, but launch discounts

One thing trips people up: the two wallets are separate. Higgsfield's help article says a subscription and the API are "two separate products with separate billing", so plan credits can't pay for API calls and API dollars don't show up on higgsfield.ai.

What it costs per clip (28 October 2026)

The API pricing page lists a "from" price per second for each model (the cheapest mode) and a lower "max-discount" price if you pick that model in the launch offer.

Seedance 2.5

List price
from $0.206/s
Max-discount price
from $0.144/s (30% off)
5-second clip at list
about $1.03

Seedance 2.0

List price
from $0.141/s
Max-discount price
from $0.099/s (30% off)
5-second clip at list
about $0.71

Kling 4.0

List price
from $0.094/s
Max-discount price
from $0.066/s (30% off)
5-second clip at list
about $0.47

Kling 3.0

List price
from $0.084/s
Max-discount price
from $0.042/s (50% off)
5-second clip at list
about $0.42

Kling 2.5

List price
from $0.042/s
Max-discount price
from $0.021/s (50% off)
5-second clip at list
about $0.21

Wan 3.0

List price
from $0.050/s
Max-discount price
from $0.020/s (60% off until 31 Oct)
5-second clip at list
about $0.25

The last column is our arithmetic: list price per second times five. Higher resolutions and other modes cost more, so check the model page for the exact mode you'll use.

What $10 buys at list price, cheapest mode (28 Oct 2026)

9

Seedance 2.5 clips

5 seconds each

21

Kling 4.0 clips

5 seconds each

47

Kling 2.5 clips

5 seconds each

So $59, the price of one month of Plus, buys about 57 five-second Seedance 2.5 clips at API list price, and you keep whatever you don't spend for a year. Whether that beats the plan depends on how many clips you really make. We did the full break-even maths, model by model, in Is the Higgsfield API cheaper than a subscription?

The launch offer, and how to use it well

On 28 October 2026 the API pricing page's FAQ listed three parts to the launch offer:

  • "Sign up to get 15% off all sale models."
  • "Choose any 3 models for discounts of up to 75%." The page banner read "up to 75% off".
  • "Verify your business email and add a card to get $15 on your balance."

Pick your three models by what you'll actually make, not by the biggest percentage. Most people need one video model they like (Seedance 2.5 or Kling 4.0), one cheap model for drafts (Kling 2.5 or Wan 3.0), and one image model. The $15 needs a business email, so a Gmail address won't qualify.

How to use it inside ChatGPT or Claude (five steps)

Here's the part that sounds harder than it is. "API" just means your AI agent calls Higgsfield with your key instead of you clicking buttons on the website. Higgsfield's FAQ says AI agents can use the API through "Copy for agent", MCP and CLI integrations.

You need an agent that can work with files on your computer: Codex in ChatGPT, Claude Code, or Cursor. The regular ChatGPT chat window can't store a key file, so it's not the place for this.

Create an account in the Higgsfield API console, open Billing, add a card and a small balance. Start small; you can top up any time, and auto top-up is optional.

In the console, pick your three launch-offer models, then open API keys and create one. Each key has two parts: a key ID and a secret.

In your coding agent, paste the setup prompt below. It builds a small helper that can call any Higgsfield model, not just one.

Open the .env file it created and paste your key ID and secret there yourself. Never paste the secret into the chat.

Ask it to save the setup as a skill (Claude Code) or a project instruction (Codex), so "use the Higgsfield API" always finds it. Then test with one cheap image and check the console's spend counter moved.

Setup prompt (paste into Codex or Claude Code)

Setup

Set up a small project for the Higgsfield API so I can generate images and videos with any model from this chat. Read the docs at https://docs.higgsfield.ai/docs/llms.txt first. Authenticate with the header Authorization: Key KEY_ID:KEY_SECRET, reading HF_API_KEY_ID and HF_API_KEY_SECRET from a .env file that you create empty and add to .gitignore. Never print or log the secret. Write one helper that takes a model endpoint and its parameters, calls the estimate endpoint first and tells me the price in dollars, waits for my OK, then submits the request, polls status_url until it finishes, and downloads the file into an outputs folder (Higgsfield deletes files after about 7 days). When you're done, tell me to open .env and paste my key.

Every time you generate

Use the Higgsfield API. Model: Seedance 2.5 image-to-video. Quote me the cost before you run it. Prompt: a slow push-in on the product on a sunny kitchen counter, steam rising from the mug.

Two habits keep your balance safe. Ask for the estimate every time (the API has an estimate endpoint that returns the cost in dollars before you generate), and keep the balance small instead of turning on auto top-up while you're learning. Higgsfield's docs also warn never to put the key in website or app code that other people can open.

MCP plugin or API: which one is "Higgsfield in ChatGPT"?

Both, and they bill differently. The Higgsfield MCP connector (the plugin in ChatGPT or the connector in Claude) signs in to your Higgsfield account and spends your plan credits. Higgsfield's help center says it needs an active paid subscription.

The API route above doesn't touch a plan at all. It spends your API balance. If you already pay for Plus and use most of it, stay with MCP. If you don't want a plan, the API is the way in.

Who should skip the API

  • You generate every day. Spent in full, plan credits work out cheaper per clip, and plans include free generations and Unlimited windows the API doesn't have. Our API vs subscription maths shows where the line falls.
  • You want the website's extras. Free generations, Unlimited windows and the app's editing tools come with a plan, not with the API balance.
  • You don't want any setup. It's five minutes, but it's five minutes with a terminal-style agent. If that's not you, a plan on the website is simpler.

Quick answers

Can I use Higgsfield without a subscription?
Yes, through the Higgsfield API. It has no plan: you prepay a dollar balance and each successful image or video is charged by model. On the website the newest video models need a paid plan; on the API they're available from your first dollar.
Is the Higgsfield API cheaper than a plan?
For low or uneven use, usually. A 5-second Seedance 2.5 clip listed at about $1.03 on 28 October 2026, so $59 buys about 57 of them with a year to spend it. If you'd use all of Plus's 1,200 credits every month, the plan is cheaper per clip.
Can I use Higgsfield inside ChatGPT without paying for a plan?
Yes, with Codex or another coding agent calling the API. The Higgsfield plugin (MCP) inside ChatGPT uses your plan credits and needs a paid subscription; the API route doesn't.
Do API credits and plan credits mix?
No. Higgsfield calls them two separate products with separate billing. API dollars can't be spent on higgsfield.ai, and plan credits can't pay for API calls.
What happens if a generation fails?
You're not charged. Higgsfield's API docs say failed and NSFW-flagged requests aren't billed, and any amount reserved for them is refunded.
How long do I have to download my videos?
About 7 days. The API keeps output files for seven days after a request finishes, then deletes them, so save them to your own computer or storage.
Does the $15 bonus work with any email?
No. The API pricing page says you get $15 on your balance when you verify a business email and add a card, so a personal Gmail address won't qualify.
